		<description>CRUMLIN - PRESBYTERIAN
http://www.crumlinpresbyterian.org

 Welcome to Crumlin Presbyterian
Friday, 14 April 2006
" The Presbyterian cause here was first located at Glenavy and when Ballinderry built its own meeting house in 1713 the Glenavy meeting-house was abandoned in 1715 in favour of a new centre at Crumlin. It was sometimes known as Lower Kilmacaret.
" The first minister called here was Mr. Thomas Crawford (lic. Belfast) son of Rev. AndrewBurning_Bush Crawford of Carnmoney. He was ordained on 10 Jan. 1724 and had a long ministry till his death on 15 July 1782. His successor Mr. John Gibson (lic. Killyleagh) was ordained on 18 Feb. 1783 and died after only 13 years on 18 July 1796.
"The next minister, Mr. Nathaniel Alexander, was a licentiate of the Antrim Non-Subscribing Presbytery and a man of much ability. Ordained on 3 Sep. 1799 he conducted an Academy in Crumlin with success. He was appointed Moderator of the General Synod of Ulster for 1817-1818 but later in 1830 he withdrew his congregation from the Synod, and with them joined the Remonstrants.
"Those members who adhered to the orthodox faith then made out a call to Mr. Alexander Colquhoun Canning (lic. Derry), and he was ordained on 9 Oct. 1838. He "commanded the confidence and respect of all who knew him" and stayed here his entire ministry till his retirement in 1888. His death occurred on 24 May 1896. He was followed in nearly every respect by his son, Mr. John Alexander Canning (lic. Templepatrick) who after his ordination on 28 May 1889 spent 40 years in Crumlin till his death on 22 Jan. 1929."

"One of the oldest (1712) in the Diocese of Connor, the Church is situated inside RAF Aldergrove, which is a military establishment subject to strong security. I had to be issued with passes for myself and my car and the RAF personnel couldn't have been more helpful and cheerfully offered me every facility. Services are held every Sunday. The wife of the Incumbent has recently published a book on the Parish of Killead and Gartree, which initially roused my interest.</description>

		<description>KILLEAD PARISH - GARTREE
http://www.glenavyhistory.com/killead_Gartree.html

Gartree, Church of Ireland - Killead Parish
The following can be found in the book "Buildings of County Antrim by C.E.B. Brett published in 1996." page 51, no 45. Includes a photograph by M. O'Connell.

Gartree (C of I) Church, Gartree.
Situated up a lane, north of the road from Crumlin to Gartree Point.
Town land - Gartree.

GARTREE
http://www.lisburn.com/books/glenavy/glenavy-1.html

The Protestant church of Gartree occupies the site of the ancient church of Kilmackevet, alias Tremfade.
In May, 1933, Mr. John Manderson presented the font that is now in Aldergrove Church grounds.
On that occasion he said he had thought "the font was a horse trough but if it was a holy water font, the P.P. of Glenavy had the best right to it."
It had lain for years in the yard of the houses occupied by John and William McGarry of Waterfoot.
It is said the stones used in the building of these houses came from the old church at Gartree hence the font. This old church was known as Kilmackevett. "Rulahach" is probably a misnomer for Killelagh in the present townland of Killealy, the Dalnach of the Pope Nicholas Taxation.
